Though intelligent processing can only be used in specific environments
its pros on large volume accounts are clear. Chargeback rates drop to
less then 0.1% on multi million dollar accounts and consistent fraudulent
use attempts can be terminated.
So, while this method tends to lose the characteristic ‘automation’
in business that the internet provides for, on certain accounts with a
need for scrutiny and tighter observation it is justified.
In November, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency had to shut
down an Illinois bank ($92 million in assets) that had lost the vast majority
of its capital from credit losses or chargebacks resulting from financially
weak and fraudulent-driven merchants or merchants unaware of the amount
of fraudulent activity taking place on their own accounts.
