Tennis
Martina Hingis, the former world no-1, will be returing to professional tennis in 2006. The 25-year-old Swiss champion told reporters that she was sad that her career was short due to her injuries. She said that she misses competition challenges. Martina wants to gauge whether she can remain healthy and match top tennis players. Martina retired from professional tennis in 2002 due to injuries. She has been a winner of five grand slam single titles.
There is little hope whether John Mcenroe would face Sergi Bruguera in the Royal Albert Hall of London. The organisers say that the Champions tour would not have any lustre if McEnroe did not turn up for the match.So far Jim Courier and Bruguera, the defending champions have won against Mats Wilander and Mikael Pernfors, in their opening matches respectively.
Squash
Peter Nicol won the world open at last. He is the first Englishman to win the coveted title.He won against Adrain Grant in a nervous 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-6 victory by the first round. Peter is the most experienced player in the tour. Peter said that he was edgy when he was just two points away from defeat. However, on accepting his edginess, Peter was able to get rid of it.
Rugby League
A three-year sponsorship has been announced by St Helens with Earth, a mortgage company. The deal has been made at two million pounds. The chief executive at St Helens quoted this deal to be the largest in rugby league. Nigel Vagana from New Zealand will be missing the next season probably due to a broken leg. He injured his leg in the win against Australia in Tri-nation series final. The new coach of Rochdale Hornets is Darren Abram. Darren, 38, played for Rochdale in the early nineties will be succeeding Bobbie Goulding.
Bowls
In the Scottish International Opens, Alex "Tattie" Marshall beat Stuart Airey in the second round to become a bowls masterclass. He will be playing the quarterfinals against Kevin Kerkow of Australia. He said that he felt he was losing his trousers. Once he belted up, he scored ten successive ends and won by 8-3, 11-1.
Hockey
Winning continues for Australia and Holland in the women's Champions' Trophy in Canberra. Both the countries recorded their third successive victories yesterday. China lost 0-1 to Australia while Holland scored 3-0 against South Korea.
Basketball
Niki Arinze missed the finals due to injury two years ago and thus he is trying to be fit for the final of the BBL cup, this Sunday. Niki, 6ft 6” American has shoulder problems and is in doubt against Newcastle Eagles. He claimed that he is under a treatment now.
Cricket
Finally the power struggle in the Indian Cricket Board saw an end yesterday with Sharad Pawar taking over Dalmiya. The Indian Agricultural minister ended the reign of influential Dalmiya by defeating the current president Ranbir Mahindra in the elections.
Rugby Union
Glasgow Warriors has announced their desire to play in Firhill. This is the home of Partrick Thistle FC. They decided to finish the games of the season there. Nottingham Rugby Club gets a new home offered by the County champions Nottinghamshire. The rugby team will be setting up a new ground at the Lady Bay, a nursery ground in Trent Bridge.
American Football
This is the perfect season for Indianapolis Colts with a convincing win against Pittsburgh Steelers. The Indiana colts are the 11th club that started a season with 11-0. This is the first since the inception of NFL in 1920.
