Roger Federer won Wimbledon with a confident victory over Andy Roddick 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.
Federer joins the elite league of Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg to win the championship third in a row. However, the 24 year old was at his best against Roddick in the first set. Roddick to his credit fought back in the 2nd set only to lose the tiebreak to his opponent. Rain failed to unsettle the Swiss, who immediately broke serve to clinch victory.
After the match in an interview he expressed his sorrow for Roddick but was happy at the same time as he played his best. He added that he was very proud of himself, as this is the third time and a very special occasion. Federer had come here with huge expectations and standing with the trophy is a dream come true for him.
The first set in the finals was a tight one for him as he lost point against serves in the first five games. However when he reached 3-2, he piled on the pressure to return some good shots to Roddick. Federer set up a second break point by firing Roddick's smash straight back past his opponent and took control when the American went long.
Roddick made one error and hit 15 winners in an inspiring first-set display and confirmed his dominance by breaking again to take it in 22 minutes.
Federer suffered a minor lapse of form at 1-1 in the second, the second seed then took his chance and broke serve for the first time in the match.
Roddick approached the net with increasing frequency, saved two set points at 4-5 and recovered from deuce at 5-6; he was, however, undone by the brilliance of Federer.
Just as Federer took a two-set lead rain allowed Roddick a little respite: he got to deuce on Federer's first service game but the holding champion took command when it mattered.
