A two year ban was held against Sun Yingjie by the Chinese sports officials yesterday. This is in spite of a court ruling that her drink was spiked with drugs. The Athletic Association of China said that they would investigate the claims that Yu Haijiang had spiked Sun's drink with drugs during training. Sun Yingjie will still face a competition ban. Moreover, Sun also failed a doping test that soon followed the 10,000 m race where she secured a second place at the National Games this October.
In Squash, Nick Matthew lost in the semi-finals of the Saudi International Squash Championships, Al Khobar. He had won the world title only six days ago but failed to carry the momentum in the tournament. Mathew, World No 11, had beaten the reigning world champion, Amr Shabana and Lee Beachill, the former world No 1. However, he was beaten 12-10, 11-1, 11-9 by the Canadian Jonathon Power, former world champion.
In Motorcycling, Chris Burns will be riding for Yamaha at the British Supersport Championship in the coming year. He took this decision after discussing with teams from World and British Superbike Series.
In Golf, World No. 4 Retief Goosen is next in line to opt out from the US Tour Event starting next month in Hawaii. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have already decided not to take part in the tournament.
In Rugby Union, the Argentinean prop Martin Rospide has been sent on loan to National Two side Moseley. He has been sent for six weeks after having made only one appearance since he joined Bristol.
The Basketball news is that in order to reach the semi-finals of BBL Trophy , Scottish Rocks have to beat non-league Teesside Mohawks by minimum 29 points. If they fail to achieve this victory margin Birmingham Bullets would qualify. In the other semi-final, Leicester Riders play the newcomers Guildford Heat.
In Table Tennis, Alan Cooke (Derbyshire) won the men’s singles in the Cheshire Open, Knutsford. Cooke, 38, the reigning English champion beat Erik Ekstrom (Sweden) 11-4, 11-2, 11-2. Helen Lower (Staffordshire), the defending woman’s English champion, defeated Lindsey Thornton-Reynolds (Lancashire) 11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8 displaying a tremendous counter-attacking game.
