The British capital has beaten Paris by 54 votes to 50 to secure the 2012 Olympiad. The other cities were Singapore, Moscow, New York and Madrid.
"This is our moment," said London bid leader Sebastian Coe, a two-time Olympic 1,500-meter champion. "It's massive. It's huge. This is the biggest prize in sport."
It was also seen as a victory for British Prime Minister Tony Blair as he got the better of French President Jacques Chirac. Blair said, "Many people do reckon that London is the greatest city in the whole world at the moment."
London, also held the games in 1908 and 1948 and will be the only city to host the Olympics three times.
