Andrew Flintoff, the hero of Ashes becomes the first cricketer in more than 20 years to be voted BBC Sports Personality of 2005 on Sunday. The lanky all-rounder was the favourite to win the award after his great form in the five-test series against Australia. He assisted England's win of their first Ashes in two decades. After getting the award from Ian Botham, the last cricketer to win the accolade, Flintoff told the audience through a live satellite link that to get the award through Botham makes it even sweeter as he was his hero. Flintoff added that being involved in the Ashes series was a great thrill. He said that to play against them was one thing, but to be involved in a side that defeated the Aussies in England was awesome.
Flintoff is due to play a one-dayer against Pakistan on Monday morning. He took 24 wickets and scored 402 runs in the Ashes series. England grabbed the Team of the Year prize for their test win against the world champions. Shane Warne, the leg spinner from Australia, who took 40 wickets, was named the Overseas Personality of the Year.
