Malware And UK Business

Written by JDPGlobal | Wednesday, 30 November 2005

New research have shown that the impact of viruses varies across different key vertical sectors of UK business. As per the latest figures released by Email Syatems, which is an email management firm, some vertical sectors are suffering more than the others from malware attacks and there’s an emergence of sector hierarchy.

The leisure and the entertainment industry along with the IT industry received one in ten of all spam emails sent over the last 12 months. One in three spam emails were received by the manufacturing sector.  The three sectors, between them have attracted more than 60 per cent of all spam and virus emails since November 2004.

On the other hand, one thing that came out from the research was that the cosmos of a second tier of sectors where malware attacks are important. This is so because each sector attracted millions of spam and virus emails every year.  One-fourth of the spam and viruses received during the last year was divided between the construction sector, the consumer goods, and financial services and banking. Tourism was also included in it.

Some of the percentage was divided between agriculture, energy utilities, media and marketing, and telecommunicaton. The CEO of Email Systems, Neil Hammerton said that he suspects that many people would find that the astonishing aspect of the results is that a large part of the affected sectors are traditional industries, whilst the media and the marketing sector are the areas that are least affected. He said that one explanation is that a lot of the orthodox sphere corporate organisations are extremely large businesses that might be spread across nations. He said that these organisations might represent a target for spammers who are on a look out to generate revenue through denial of service attacks.
