The NHS Counter Fraud Service (NHS CFS) and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB)are moving into a new partnership to target bogus pharmacists, people stealing the identities of real pharmacists and those committing pharmaceutical fraud.
Sharing information and closer working techniques are the guidelines that the pact has set for itself in safeguarding the patients, it will also develop counter fraud techniques and share information to crack down on those defrauding the NHS or abusing the registration procedures of the RPSGB.
It applies to England and Wales and will outline how the investigators of both organisations can work together.
The RPSGB was set up in 1998 and has been able to reduce fraud from £117 million in 1998 to £47 million in 2004. The general belief is that MOU will help to reduce it further.
Experts have raised their voice in support of the pact, saying that the Memorandum of Understanding will better information sharing and joint investigations between the two organisations and will allow information relevant to the core functions of each organisation to be exchanged at an early stage thus ensuring early detection of fraudulent activities and fitness to practise issues.
