Identifying risk is the first step in evaluating your exposure in foreign exchange. JDP Global can help identify and assess both hidden and overt risks:

  • Translation Risk - accounting-based risk which comes from the translation of financial statements from one currency to another currency
  • Transaction Risk – To do with the possible gains and losses on a given transaction vulnerable to foreign exchange rate movements
  • Sovereign Risk – To do with political risk, the stability of foreign governments and maintenance of favorable relations with Western Governments
  • Exchange Risk - Caused by government exchange controls, availability, and the transfer of "hard currency" out of the particular foreign country
  • Economic Risk - a competitive risk that gauges if a competitor will set prices in local currency over your own currency

 

 

Hedging Alternatives

To reduce your exposure to changes in foreign exchange rates, JDP Global advises on techniques, commonly called hedging, which include:

  • Forward Contract - the outright purchase or sell of a foreign currency for a time in the future
  • Investing or Borrowing in a Foreign Currency - makes a future receivable or payable that may offset other exposures in that currency by investing or borrowing in a foreign currency
  • Call or Put Option - Guarantees the buyer of the option to buy or sell a currency at a fixed rate without the obligation to do so. The buyer has to pay a premium for that privilege. (This is a good choice for a contingent liability / to provide protection with the opportunity for gain.)
  • Range Forward - Lets you profit on currency moves to a predetermined level, while limiting your risk of downward movement by sticking to exchange currencies within a band of rates at a set time in the future.
