A meeting held by the communist party and their counterpart’s Kuomintang is to happen in Taipei but the government themselves have not approved the visas of a delegation of the governments that has come to attend the meeting. Due to this problem coming up it was announced that the forum might be shifted to Hong Kong.
The KNT had called Lian Chen, the honorary chairman of the party to lead a delegation of sixty-six people but the entire delegations visa applications were turned down by the Mainland Affairs Council. Chen is about to embark on a visit to Hong Kong. There he will bring up the issue of holding the conference in the nation. He will be discussing certain issues with the nations chief executive Tsang Yam Kuan. He will receive an honorary Doctorate of Philosophy of Law conferred by the Chinese University in Hong Kong where he will be giving a speech on the topic, “The prospects of the Chinese people”.
He said that with latest “compact” elections the government should realize that the people of the nations views should be adhered to. It was the peoples desire to go into more mainstream economic reforms and trade policies. He petitioned the Mainland Affairs Council to reconsider the decision that they made to reject the delegations visas. He said that it was one step further in accommodating cross strait trade and bringing stable bilateral relations.
In another development, the vice chairman of the Mainland Affairs council hinted at the ruling party to relieve the press of the restrictions that are placed on them. This, he said, would allow the people to get the real news and be aware of what is happening in Taiwan and the World. The council's vice chairman spoke about cross strait exchanges of the press.
This was at a symposium put on by the Chinese Development Fund and the School of Communication, Ming Chuan University, Taipei. He showed that in the light of the press exchanges the either side could be made aware of the domestic changes made in this respect in both Taiwan and China.
